Barge, Year 2, Project 0

The brief for this summer project, kick-starting my second year studies, was to design an ideal creative space for me.

I chose the site to be on the banks of river Daugava, Rīga, Latvia. This would combine the elements of nature and city, which was important for me. The area around the project site was mostly built from dismantled shipping barges as the trains took over as the better means of shipping goods. In my design, a barge like timber structure is curved to flow into the river, like a small creak, starting from the banks and hovering across the surface of the water.

The creative space is combined with a home. Window openings on the walls and the ceiling guide through the space, creating a journey, a script for the creative process. This culminates in a 180 degree panorama of the city, after which the structure sinks down into the river, achieving access form both land and water.
